Mother Teresa’s business card

Mother Teresa was once talking about her practice of meeting people who visit the Mother House in Calcutta. She explained that her practice was to give each visitor what she called her “business card.”

On it, this was written: “The fruit of silence is prayer; the fruit of prayer is faith; the fruit of faith is love; the fruit of love is service; the fruit of service is peace.”

Interesting how all these components work together and give rise to the others.

All of these components, in this order, are the business of a Christian.

There’s logic to her order. But oftentimes I try to get to something out of order. For instance, straight from silence (the first element) to peace (the last). Well, perhaps we will have silence, but it will be an empty peace–you know, a peace and quiet that holds no peace and quiet. In this case, the silence will not lead to a closer walk with God–for prayer, faith, love, and service are missing. With those things missing, we cannot hope to be at peace with God.

I don’t know if this makes sense, but it does to me!

  1. I love Mother Teresa! My mom named me after her, actually. I have to say I did not know about here “business card,” before, but I like it. It's very true, and I am going to write down in one of my many quote books because I really do like it a lot!
