St. Peter Claver: It take a "strong stomach"

Today Mother Church celebrates the feast day of St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest ordained by the time he was 20 years old. He died in 1654.

He’s well known for his service to the slaves in the Americas. Apparently, he converted over 300,000 souls while he spent time on the plantations working with them.

Once, someone I guess asked him how he could do all his work in such terrible places. His response: “I do have a strong stomach. If that makes a person a saint, then I guess I am one!”

He also shared some excellent words about his own vocation. I think he knew that his work was exactly what God was calling him to do. His words: “If it were not for this work, I would be a nuisance to myself and everyone else!”

St. Peter Claver: Pray for us!
