Today Mother Church celebrates the feast day of Sts. Simon and Jude, apostles.
As you look at Da Vinci’s Last Supper painting, Simon is the one on the far right and Jude, also called Thaddeus, is the one right next to him.
Jude is usually pictured with a club, which was the instrument of his death, and with flame over his head to show the Spirit’s influence upon him at Pentecost:
Simon is pictured in art with a saw, the instrument of his martyrdom.
Both saints are mentioned in the Roman Canon (EPI). Jude is the author of the Letter of St. Jude in the NT, so perhaps today would be a good day for me to read that over again.
Jude is also the patron saint of hopeless causes, but we don’t know any of those do we? ha.
Sts. Simon and Jude: Pray for us!
