St. Scholastica’s prayer for the favor of God

Today Mother Church celebrates the feast of St. Scholastica, patron saint of Benedictine nuns and sister of St. Benedict.

There was one moment when Scholastica was talking with her brother in a house not far from Monte Cassino, which was close to Benedict’s monastery.

They met and talked about spiritual concerns. One year (it was an annual thing), they were talking when Benedict said it was time he had to leave. She argued that they still had much to discuss.

She offered a quick prayer a huge storm came, making it impossible for Benedict to leave. She told him: “I asked a favor of you, and you refused it. I asked it of God, and He has granted it!”

Good thing, too, because she died three days later.

So often people say no when they could, and probably should, say yes. In these moments we must pray to God and trust that his will will be done.

Let’s pray for the intercession of St. Scholastica, that she might strengthen the Church’s Benedictine sisters and bring their work to success.
