Caring enough to cry

Pope Francis lamented not that long ago that part of what troubles him is that we Christians have lost our tears. St. Monica, whom we celebrate today, did not lose her tears. She cried for her lost son. She didn’t say, “Whatever path he chooses is fine.” She cried because of how lost he was. I wonder if maybe we have lost our tears for the lost ones in our lives. If we cared enough to cry, we might care enough to find a way to get them back.
