Today we honor Saints John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues and their companions. We pray especially today for Brébeuf High School in Indianapolis. These saints–they were the first missionary martyrs in North America, and they spent their lives sharing Christ with folks in the northeast part of the New World. They lived simple lives, probably had only a suitcase worth of stuff. Today’s Gospel about the rich man and his barns got to thinking about these saints and their simplicity of life. Their simplicity of life gave them focus, focus on God and neighbor. I don’t know of a single canonized saint who had a huge barn or house filled with junk. And aren’t we supposed to be saints.
