“Just as through one transgression condemnation came upon all, so, through one righteous act acquittal and life came to all”

Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Paul of the Cross, founder of the Passionists. We pray for them today. In our first reading, we see St. Paul explaining the doctrine of original sin and how we all inherit it. Bp. Robert Baron likens it to the condition of a baby born to a heroine-addict: it’s not the baby’s fault, but there is a problem there, a problem he inherited. So it is with us. But St. Paul notes that, just as we all inherited original sin form our first parents at our birth (far worse than a heroine addiction), we inherit from Jesus when we are born again in baptism an “abundance of grace.” God’s grace destroys the plague of original sin, that horrible addiction we inherited from Adam. And in its place, God gives us grace. Overflowing grace. Thanks be to God!
