Daily homily thoughts, 2/7

Today’s Gospel quotes from Isaiah: “This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.” For years now I have had those lines on the first page of my breviary. It is a reminder to me that I need to actually pray when I pray. I need to use my heart. Our first reading is all about fruitfulness, new life, multiplication. That is what happens when we pray, really pray. Like with our hearts: grace is multiplied, new life is ushered in for ourselves and the church and world. So much fruit comes from real prayer. So let’s use our hearts, not just our lips.
