Today Stephen has some tough words for the elders: “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the Holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors.” It seems to me an important Christian virtue is flexibility, that ability to “go with the flow.” I think that’s true. But today we also celebrate St. Athanasius. He was wholly inflexible when it came to defending the Church and the divinity of Christ. Had he “gone with the flow” and agreed with so many other bishops and their heretical views, our Church would have gone down a bad road. Good thing he didn’t. I suppose it all comes down to discerning: when must I be flexible? And when can I loosen my neck?
