Daily homily thoughts, 6/27

Today we celebrate the feast of St Cyril of Alexandria, who presided at the Council of Ephesus in 431. He was a fierce defender of the faith. Cyril believed that if we misunderstand Jesus, we misunderstand everything. You see, there were those in his time who did not believe Mary to be God-bearer, Theotokos. Why? Because they thought Jesus was not God. Cyril declared boldly and proudly that Mary is Theotokos, because Jesus is fully man and fully God. If you misunderstand Jesus, you misunderstand Mary, you misunderstand dogma, you misunderstand others, you misunderstand yourself. That is a good lesson.
