Daily homily thoughts, 12/4

Today we hear about our centurion, who said, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.” Maybe he expected Jesus to pat him on the shoulder, or say a prayer, or work a miracle from afar. But Jesus’ plan was different: he would go to the house and pay a personal visit.  The centurion responds, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed.”  In a sense, he was saying, “Lord! Who am I that you should come to my home? Just do your miracle from here, just say a word and he’ll be okay…you don’t have to go to this trouble.”  But Jesus always goes to the trouble for us, he comes and pays a personal visit. That’s what the eucharist is all about.
