Daily homily thoughts, 6/30

Today we remember the First Martyrs of the Roman Church.  They were martyred by Emperor Nero in 64 A.D. after a large fire in Rome.  They were blamed for the fire, which legend tells us, was started by Nero himself to make room for the enlargement of his palace.  He was overcome by greed.  Earthly things are not what satisfies us.  Emperor Nero committed suicide in 68 A.D.  He was not satisfied with his earthly riches, and neither will we.  How often do we let greed take a hold of us?
