Somehow I couldn’t find my shoes this morning. I came to Mass in my sandals. Couldn’t find them for my life, those shoes. What a country we live in — that’s the height of my problems this morning. Today’s Gospel has this great line: “Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus….” We pray the same that is said of this town might be said, one day, of our country. Our country has religious roots, and we must keep them. A person, a marriage or family, a town, a country goes down a bad road when it neglects its Christian roots. We celebrate today our independence as a country, but may we never neglect our dependence on God.
