Thurgood Marshall once noted that the measure of a country’s greatness is its ability to retain compassion in times of crisis. This is true for us as individuals also. The measure of our greatness is: do we keep the faith, so we retain compassion even in moments of crisis? Today we remember St. Maria Goretti. She faced a crisis when she was only 12. But she clung to Jesus in the midst of that crisis. Amos predicts all kinds of horrible things in our first reading—darkness at midday, mourning at feasts, famine, etc. Will they keep the faith, retain compassion? We pray that no matter what crisis comes our way, that we will retain compassion and keep close to the faith.
