Daily homily thoughts, 9/3

Today we celebrate Labor Day and St. Gregory the Great. They go together. Labor is a gift from the Lord. If ever we doubt that, we might think of the many people in nursing homes who wish they could work again. In Genesis, God entrusts work in the garden to Adam and Eve BEFORE the fall. Work is not a punishment or consequence of the fall. It was part of the original plan. Pope Gregory teaches us that work exists in order that we might serve. He’s the one that coined the term “servant of the servants of the Lord” as a title for the pope.
