The O Antiphons are ancient liturgical texts that call upon Christ to come into the world. Their origins are in the Old Testament, and so the Church has been praying them from the beginning. Starting in the eighth century, they took on greater prominence. To this day, the Church around the world prays them during Vespers and as the Alleluia verse at Mass from December 17 through December 23. Using these ancient O Antiphons, the Church expresses her deep longing for the coming of the Messiah.
