The man who lost his job: A homily for Christ the King (C)

Deacon Tom tells the true story of a friend of his who, ten years ago, was his co-worker

One day the man came into Dcn. Tom’s office and said, “It’s been nice working with you. I just lost my job here.”

Deacon Tom said he was sorry and was there anything he could do. Then he said, “What’d you do when they told you the news?”

The man looked Dcn Tom right in the eyes and said: “I thanked the Lord. I can’t wait to see how my Savior will deliver me from this.”

That is faith!  Two points:

  1. This story shows how important it is to thank God ALWAYS.  1 Thes 5:18 says that we are to give thanks to God in all circumstances, not just when things are great and go as we want them to.  In all circumstances. Even when we lose a job or a phone or a wallet or some money or a loved one.  We give thanks to God.
  2. This story also shows that God is king of everything.  Everything.  He made the stars and the mountains and the cosmos.  He did all that and as our second reading says, holds it all together.  Jesus is King and he’s in control.  There is a BIGGER PICTURE and he sees it while we don’t.

Praised be Jesus Christ now and forever
