Today is the feast of St. Francis de Sales. When he was 35 he was named bishop of Geneva. Geneva was the stronghold of Calvinism and he suffered greatly under them. They even kicked him out. Central to their tenets was and is predestination – but Francis de Sales preached against that by sharing this simple and beautiful truth: one must have a wholly disinterested love of God, without regard for whether one will go to heaven or hell. We don’t do this whole religion thing for what I “get” out of it; we do it for God’s sake! It was a remains a great message..one we might do well to follow.
